The Hook & The Promise

Your father's old CJ3B sits in the backyard, covered in dust and memories.

Or maybe it's an MM540 you spotted at a village near Pollachi—rusted through, engine seized, but somehow still calling to you. Those distinctive seven-slot grilles, that unbreakable reputation, the knowledge that these Jeeps once climbed mountains and crossed rivers without breaking a sweat.

Here's what most people don't understand: a CJ3B or MM540 in rough shape isn't a lost cause. It's a blank canvas.

At JeepClinic Coimbatore, we've brought back CJ3Bs that looked like scrap metal and turned them into show-stoppers. We've rebuilt MM540s that hadn't run in 20 years and watched them tackle the Nilgiris trails like nothing ever happened. This is what we do—and we've been doing it longer than most workshops in Tamil Nadu have been open.

Whether you want a museum-quality restoration or a modified beast that dominates off-road trails around Valparai, our Vadavalli and Peelamedu workshops have the skills, experience, and obsessive attention to detail to make it happen.

Let's talk about how we bring these Indian legends back to life.

JeepClinic Coimbatore — CJ3B & MM540 Restoration Specialists

Walk into any tea shop in Coimbatore and mention CJ3Bs or MM540s, and someone will have a story. "My uncle had one." "Used to see them everywhere in the estates." "Toughest Jeep ever made."

They're right. These Mahindra classics are bulletproof—when they're maintained properly.

But here's the problem: most of them haven't been maintained properly. They've been sitting, rusting, deteriorating for decades. Original parts are scarce. Mechanics who actually understand these vehicles are even scarcer.

That's the gap JeepClinic fills.

Why CJ3B and MM540 Restorations Are Different

Let's be clear: restoring a CJ3B or MM540 isn't like working on a modern Thar or a Bolero. These are mechanically simpler vehicles, but that simplicity comes with its own challenges:

1. Rust Is the Real Enemy

These Jeeps were built tough, but they weren't built to resist decades of monsoon rains in Tamil Nadu. Floor pans rust through. Body tubs corrode from the inside out. Chassis rails weaken in spots you can't see until you strip everything down.

At JeepClinic, we don't patch rust—we cut it out completely and replace it with properly welded new metal. That's the difference between a restoration that lasts five years and one that lasts fifty.

2. Parts Scarcity

Try finding an original CJ3B windshield frame or MM540 dashboard in good condition. Try sourcing correct-spec brake drums or matching gauges. It's nearly impossible.

We've spent years building relationships with suppliers across India. We know who has NOS (new old stock) parts. We know which aftermarket components are worth using and which will fail. And when original parts simply don't exist anymore, we fabricate them in-house to original specifications.

3. The Peugeot Engine Challenge

Many MM540s came with Peugeot diesel engines—fantastic motors when they're running right, absolute nightmares when they're not. Finding someone in Coimbatore who actually understands how to rebuild a Peugeot XD3P engine? Good luck.

Our workshop specializes in these powerplants. We've rebuilt dozens of them. We know the common failure points, the parts that need upgrading, the modifications that improve reliability without sacrificing authenticity.

The JeepClinic CJ3B Restoration Process

Let's walk through what happens when you bring your CJ3B to our Vadavalli or Peelamedu workshop.

Initial Inspection & Project Planning

First visit is always the same: we crawl under, over, and through your Jeep with a flashlight and a magnet. We're checking frame integrity, rust patterns, mechanical condition, originality. We photograph everything.

Then we sit down and talk about what you actually want. Full originality? Period-correct but with modern reliability? Custom off-road build? Your goals determine the approach.

Complete Teardown

Everything comes apart. And I mean everything. Body panels, seats, wiring, gauges, steering column, pedals, brake lines—down to a bare frame and tub. This is the only way to properly assess what you're working with.

We've found everything during teardowns: hidden accident damage, previous bad repairs, unexpected original features, even personal items left by previous owners decades ago.

Frame & Chassis Work

The frame is the foundation. If it's compromised, nothing else matters.

We sandblast it down to bare metal, inspect every inch for cracks or weakness, repair what needs fixing, and apply proper rust protection. For badly damaged frames, we can source or fabricate replacement sections.

This phase also includes suspension mounting points, steering box mounts, body mounts—all the hard points that determine how the Jeep drives and handles.

Body Tub Restoration

This is where the real metalwork happens. CJ3B and MM540 tubs rust in predictable places: floor pans, inner rockers, around the rear wheel arches, behind the seats.

Bad shops just slap fiberglass over the holes. We cut out the rot and weld in new steel. Every patch gets properly fitted, welded, ground smooth, and treated for rust protection. When we're done, you shouldn't be able to tell where the old metal ends and the new metal begins.

For tubs that are too far gone, we can source complete replacement bodies or build custom tubs from scratch.

Mechanical Rebuild: Engine, Transmission, Axles

Now we get into the mechanical guts.

Engine Options:

  • Complete rebuild of original Peugeot diesel (MM540)
  • Rebuild of MDI petrol engines (early CJ3Bs)
  • Modern engine swaps (Tata or Mahindra diesels for better parts availability)

We machine what needs machining, replace what's worn, upgrade what makes sense (electronic ignition, better cooling, improved fuel delivery).

Transmission & Transfer Case: Most CJ3Bs and MM540s have Mahindra four-speeds. Simple, tough, easy to rebuild. We go through them completely—synchros, bearings, seals, shift forks. Same with the transfer case.

Axles & Differentials: Front and rear axles get stripped, inspected, rebuilt. New bearings, seals, sometimes upgraded ring and pinion sets for better performance. Brakes get completely replaced—drums, shoes, wheel cylinders, lines.

Electrical System Overhaul

Old Jeeps have simple electrical systems—lights, ignition, gauges, not much else. But decades of amateur repairs turn them into fire hazards.

We strip out every wire and install new harnesses. Period-correct cloth-wrapped if you want originality, modern waterproof if you want reliability. Every connection gets properly soldered and heat-shrunk. No crimp connectors, no electrical tape, no shortcuts.

Paint & Bodywork

Once the metal is solid, we move to finish work. Body panels get aligned, gaps get perfected, and everything is prepped for paint.

We can match original Mahindra colors, replicate military schemes, or do custom paint jobs. The choice is yours. Either way, the prep work is obsessive—because paint only looks as good as the surface underneath it.

Final Assembly & Road Testing

This is the satisfying part. Watching a pile of parts transform back into a complete Jeep.

Every nut and bolt goes back with the correct torque. Every adjustment gets dialed in perfectly. Carburetor tuning, brake adjustment, wheel alignment, clutch pedal height—nothing gets overlooked.

Then we drive it. Road test, trail test, test every system under load. If something isn't right, we fix it before you ever see the finished Jeep.

MM540 Restoration: The Mahindra Legend

The MM540 holds a special place in Indian automotive history. It was Mahindra's workhorse through the '70s and '80s—tougher than nails, simpler than a hammer, and utterly unstoppable when properly maintained.

What Makes MM540 Restoration Unique?

The Peugeot Diesel Advantage: That XD3P engine was light-years ahead of its time. Reliable, fuel-efficient, powerful enough for serious work. But finding someone who can properly service one today? Nearly impossible. Our technicians have specialized training in these motors.

Purpose-Built Toughness: MM540s were designed for plantation work, military use, and rough rural roads. The engineering is simple but brilliant. Restoring one means respecting that utilitarian DNA while adding modern safety and comfort where it makes sense.

Collector Value: Clean MM540s are becoming increasingly rare and valuable. A proper restoration isn't just about having a cool Jeep—it's about preserving automotive heritage.

Modern Upgrades Without Losing the Classic Soul

Here's where we differ from purist restorers: we believe old Jeeps can benefit from modern technology—when done right.

Popular Upgrades We Recommend:

Electronic Ignition: Eliminates points and condensers, improves starting and reliability

Disc Brake Conversion: Front discs dramatically improve stopping power and safety

Power Steering: Makes these Jeeps drivable in city traffic without losing your arms

Modern Tires: Period-correct looks with modern rubber compounds for better grip

LED Lighting: Looks stock but actually works at night

Upgraded Suspension: Better shocks and springs for improved ride quality and off-road capability

Sound Deadening: Reduces noise and vibration without changing appearance

The key is tasteful integration. When we're done, the Jeep should look period-correct but drive like it was built with 50 years of engineering improvements baked in.
